Dr. Sally K. Ride became the first American woman to fly in space. Two communication satellites were successfully deployed. Experiments investigating space sickness, the use of remote sensing scanners, and the formation of metal alloys in microgravity were conducted. The effect of space on the social behavior of an ant colony was also studied.!
